State Key Laboratory of Geo-hazard Prevention (SKLGP), CDUT, China

The State Key Laboratory of Geohazard Prevention and Geoenvironment Protection ranked first in the two evaluations by the Ministry of Land and Resources in 2012 and 2018. The laboratory now is an exclusive state key laboratory in the field of geohazard prevention and mitigation in China. Playing a leading role in this field, SKLGP has provided important scientific support for geoharzard prevention and geoenvironment protection both theoretically and technologically. The present director of SKLGP academic committee is Academician Peng Jianbing from Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Professor Huang Runqiu is in charge of the laboratory.

Since the 1980s, the engineering geology research team led by Professor Zhang Zhuoyuan has been dedicated to the development as well as the cutting-edge research on engineering geology. In recent years, with the development of the State Key Laboratories, the leading role of SKLGP in this field of China has been further strengthened. Professor Huang Runqiu, the director of SKLGP, has been the chairman of the Chinese Engineering Geology Professional Committee for two consecutive terms, leading this discipline to continuous innovation and development. Moreover, since Professor Huang Runqiu became the vice president of International Association of Engineering Geology and Environment (IAEG) in 2010, he has been endeavoring to promote our engineering geology to the world and has set the secretariat of IAEG in China, which has greatly enhanced the status and influence of China's engineering geology discipline in the international arena.

In recent years, especially since the the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, SKLGP has held several LARAM international doctoral training courses. In 2013, the Laboratory initiated and led the establishment of International Research Association on Large Landslides (iRALL). Until now, SKLGP has trained over 300 young doctoral students and international well-known experts from more than 20 countries and regions, which has greatly improved their capacities of solving issues on large-scale landslide disasters and has gained widespread praise in the world. The laboratory has been recruiting overseas postdoctoral fellows since 2017, and currently 11 postdoctoral fellows have been enrolled. In 2019, SKLGP was approved by the "the Programme of Introducing Talents of Discipline to Universities", and established the "International Joint Research Base for Geological Disaster Prevention and Control", through which 15 foreign experts were introduced.

At present, SKLGP has become an key base for scientific research and high-level personnel training in this field in China, as well as one of the important centers for geological disaster research in the world.
